Can a 10HP motor with 14A load be wired with 14 AWG cable

Question asked:

“A 10HP motor with a full load amperage of 14 amperes can be wired with 14 AWG cable”
Not permissible
Confidence: High Checked on October 7, 2026

Summary

According to the NEC ampacity tables, 14 AWG copper conductors are limited to 15 A overcurrent protection. Motor circuits must size conductors for 125 % of the full‑load current, which for a 14 A motor requires at least 17.5 A, exceeding the 15 A limit of 14 AWG. Therefore a 10 HP motor drawing 14 A cannot be safely wired with 14 AWG cable.

    >>>> I think you need to look at the motor's FLA (full load amp) rating and not HP rating, for your wire size. Correct, amperage is the factor that determines the wire size, not horse power. ... Breakers protect the wiring - so choice of breaker drives the minimum awg.
