Blood Gang Light Flashing Death Claim Debunked

They say that as part of a Bloods initiation game, new gang members are required to drive along with no lights and then chase the first car that flashes them and shoot and kill everyone in the vehicle.

The e-mail then goes on to describe a Bloods gang initiation right in which new members drive with their lights off. When another car makes a courtesy flash to warn them, they kill everyone in that car.

Who knew the Bloods were so civic minded? Even so, I'll bet that urban legend still has legs, even for those who know better. A friend told me that he knew very well that it was a myth. He'd known about it for years. But just to be safe, he says, he never, ever flashes his lights at another car.

As for the claim that assaults such as the one reported in this e-mailed warning being "all over the news," there has not been a spate of stories cropping up in the media about gang members luring motorists off the road by flashing their brights at them. Indeed, we couldn't find so much as one news story about such an attack.

The Bloods was initially formed to provide members protection from the Crips. Many of the non-Crip gangs used to call one another "blood". On March 21, 1972, shortly after a concert featuring Wilson Pickett and Curtis Mayfield, 20 youths belonging to the Crips attacked and robbed Robert Ballou Jr.

They were kidnapped, and the assailants withdrew money from their bank accounts. Two victims provided detailed accounts of Blue Light Gang encounters: One described attackers in a "white double-decker GT6" with "five guys, three men dressed in police-colored uniform" who assaulted his wife.

By 1984, the story had spread to Eugene, Oregon, where it had morphed into a story of Latino and black gangs targeting whites. In August 1993, the story once again appeared, this time spread through fax and email forwarding. Warning of a "blood initiation weekend" on 25 and 26 September, the rumor this time led some police departments to issue warnings after having received the fake ones.
