Horner & Whiten Study: Humans Imitate, Chimpanzees Emulate

In their 2005 study, Horner and Whiten look at how humans and chimpanzees learn socially, especially the difference between imitation and emulation. Their results show that even though both species can learn by watching others, humans tend to copy actions in a very detailed way, even when some of those actions are not actually needed. In the study, both children and chimpanzees watched someone use a puzzle box to get a reward. Some of the steps used were necessary, while others were not important for getting the reward. Both groups watched an adult opening a simple ‘puzzle fruit’ using a short sequence of necessary and visibly unnecessary actions, and were subsequently allowed to try and open the fruit for themselves.
