Behavioural Assessment in EBP: Mostly Accurate Claims Examined

“Behavioural assessment offers high ecological validity and a direct link to intervention, supporting practice-based evidence through idiographic data. However, it can be time-intensive, susceptible to observer bias (Cooper & Rosenthal, 1980), and difficult to apply to infrequent behaviours. Traditional psychometric criteria are also harder to apply, though inter-observer agreement can improve reliability. Despite its importance, EBP implementation faces barriers. The COM-B model conceptualises these as limitations in capability (e.g., appraisal skills), opportunity (e.g., time, resources), and motivation (e.g., resistance to change). Addressing these requires organisational support, access to research, protected time, and integration of EBP into supervision (Lin et al., 2010).”

Summary

Behavioural assessment is recognized for its strong ecological validity and its direct connection to intervention, providing idiographic, practice‑based evidence. It is also acknowledged as time‑intensive, prone to observer bias, and less suited to rare behaviours, with traditional psychometric standards harder to apply, though inter‑observer agreement can enhance reliability. Implementation of evidence‑based practice indeed encounters capability, opportunity, and motivation barriers as described by the COM‑B framework, requiring organizational support, research access, protected time, and supervisory integration.

A primary objective of these methods is to sample the ongoing stream of behavior or thought in its natural sequence and occurrence, and thereby, provide an accurate and valid representation of individuals’ function that generalizes to real-world situations. By design, through repeated assessment of individuals’ behavior and experience in their natural environments, these approaches prioritize ecological validity.

Furthermore, we believe that it is timely to evaluate to which extent recent advances in stimulus generation, data collection methods, and study design may have improved the EV of experimental findings, and the EV of data obtained from large-scale surveys that strive for “contextual” embeddedness. We would also like to mention that the common treatment of EV in current developmental science, in general, and in the context of ecological momentary assessments, in particular, in our view lacks a certain degree of critical reflection.

In Study 1, the inter-rater reliability of a novel behavioural observation assessment method was assessed with 10 people with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
