Lin Fengmians Influence on Chinese Art Education Extends Beyond His Art

While in France, Lin was introduced to modern art. Upon his return, he dived into an ambitious venture to integrate Western art, a vanguard, free spirit, and Chinese culture, as a way of reforming Chinese art.

A pivotal figure of this cohort of Chinese modernist painters is Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), who studied art in France in the early 1920s and later returned to China, as did some of his peers, devoting many years to art education.

Later, he served as the director of the Hangzhou Art Academy for ten years. He taught western painting while Pan Tianshou taught traditional painting. Among his former students are some of the biggest names in Chinese modern art, including Li Keran, Zao Wouki, Huang Yongyu and Wu Guangzhong.

In 1928, Lin became the director of the newly established National Academy of Art in Hangzhou, introducing Van Gogh and Cezanne into the curriculum. Among his students were two artists who would become world-famous: Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki.
