The Pentagon has solicited proposals for prefabricated bunkers to be delivered to its bases in the Middle East, hinting at preparations for a longer-term conflict.

By April 1954, "Little Pentagon" development had cost $35,000,000. After the 1954 Air Defense Command blockhouse was built at Ent Air Force Base, where the joint 1955 Continental Air Defense Command was activated, in August 1955 OSD approved the automatic activation of Raven Rock's Alternate Joint Communication Center on declaration of air defense warning or notice of surprise attack (SAC similarly completed a bunker in 1955).

In response to his question as to what this was, he was told it stood for Deep Underground Command and Control Site, a facility that would be located several thousand feet underground, between the White House and the Pentagon, designed to survive a ground burst of a 20-megaton bomb and sustain the president and key advisers for several months until it would be safe to exit through tunnels emerging many miles outside Washington.

The bunkers will be sent to the Aqaba Air Cargo Terminal at King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba, Jordan, according to the posting. U.S. Central Command officials declined to comment on the solicitation.

This is a longer-term project, with work not expected to start until 2028. Though Hegseth says more bunkers for bases in the Middle East are now a priority, it remains unclear why this was not already the case years ago.
