Ace Frehley Sober For 10 Years After Scary Phone Call

Frehley started drinking at the age of 13, and struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse for decades. He only became sober in 2006, after a worrying call from his daughter prompted Frehley to seek the help of his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley recalled the phone call that led him to finally step away from alcohol 13 years ago.

Five years ago, Frehley recalled the phone call that led him to finally step away from alcohol, telling SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk": "I got a phone call from my daughter, Monique, and she was living in Florida at the time.

My daughter is sober, my girlfriend is pretty much sober.” · Ace continues, “I can’t be around people that get loaded or do drugs and there’s no alcohol or drugs allowed in the dressing room when I tour, around the bus.

“[E]very time I perform a concert I usually have meet-and-greets after the show… at least one person comes up to me and says, ‘Ace, I’ve been sober two years,’ ‘Ace, I’ve been sober five years,’” Frehley shared. “I’m helping people live longer lives, more fruitful lives, because I’m a power of example. Go figure!” · Back in 2017, Frehley’s former Kiss bandmate Gene Simmons, who’s no stranger to controversy, said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune that he attributres his success to the fact that he does not imbibe.
