The factors triggering and driving human information seeking form a complex research issue that Case (2012, p. 77) has aptly characterized as a “motivational puzzle.” In library and information science (LIS), the motivators for information seeking have traditionally been discussed under labels, such as information need (Wilson, 1981), anomalous state of knowledge, (Belkin, Oddy, & Brooks, 1982), gap (Dervin, 1983), and uncertainty (Kuhlthau, 1993). For an overview, see Anderson (2010), Case (2012), and Naumer and Fisher (2010). In particular, the construct of information need has been widely used in empirical research about information seeking. Such studies provide a useful, detailed picture of how information needs manifest themselves, giving rise to seeking information.

Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to explore the information needs and information seeking behaviors of patients and families from healthcare providers in acute healthcare settings in existing literature.

In fact, despite information seeking being central to human behaviour, we know remarkably little about how to quantify it or the mechanisms that underlie it. To address these unknowns, we conducted five studies in which participants were asked to indicate whether they would want to receive 40 pieces of information.
