Is 1 Corinthians 14:38-40 a Biblical Quote?

How important it is that what we say in the Lord’s House be clearly understood by those who hear us, and be to the glory of God. Are we speaking and singing to be understood? The first verse of this chapter refers to the preceding chapter, which highlighted the preeminence of love. Paul wanted the Corinthians to understand that, while spiritual gifts are valuable, they need to be kept in the proper perspective.

Paul said, "Look, if the guy is truly spiritual, let him acknowledge that these things that I am saying are from the Lord." If you really have the gift of prophecy, if you are truly spiritual, you have to acknowledge this.

38 But if anyone disregards this, he will be disregarded.* 39 So, my brothers, keep striving to prophesy,+ and yet do not forbid the speaking in tongues.+ 40 But let all things take place decently and by arrangement.+

Paul's description of his sense of leadership is expressed in 7:40 and 14:38. Paul recognized his Apostolic gift and its authority to speak for Christ. His apostleship was being questioned and challenged by some at Corinth.

37 If anyone thinks that he is ... the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

That is how some people have read these verses over the years, but I think that is a misreading of the text. Why? For starters, it would create a hopeless contradiction with what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:5, which indicates that women were “praying and prophesying” in the church.

Rather than following the interpolation hypothesis, this article argues that 1 Cor 14:33b–38 is best understood as Paul’s quotation and subsequent refutation of the Corinthian men’s position that women ought to be silent in the assemblies, a position which originated in the Judaizing faction of the church.
