They keep you alive (breathing, heart beating, your brain and other organs functioning as well as creating and repairing cells). This accounts for approximately 60-70% of your overall daily calorie expenditure. Calories are also used to fuel your movements, whether it’s walking, fidgeting, gardening, housework or intentional exercise such as a workout. This accounts for roughly 20-30% of your daily calorie expenditure Your digestion (thermic effect of food) also requires calories to function, and this uses around 10% of your overall calorie expenditure. Calories vs Kilocalories (kcal): Technically, a calorie and a kilocalorie (kcal) are not the same but in nutrition, they’re used interchangeably. A calorie (small ‘c’) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C. A kilocalorie (kcal) is 1,000 calories and is the unit used to measure energy in food. On food labels and in everyday conversation when you see ‘calories’, it actually means kilocalories (kcal). Carbohydrates (Carbs) Carbohydrates are your body’s main source of energy, providing the fuel needed for daily activity, exercise, and proper brain function. Typically providing 4 calories per gram. You should aim to get 30-45% of your calories from carbs. Adequate carbs helps fuel training performance and supports recovery and energy levels Not all carbohydrates are created equally. There are two main groups of carbs, simple carbs and complex carbs. Simple carbs are broken down and absorbed quickly, which means they provide a fast source of energy. These are found in sugar, sweets, soft drinks, fruit and fruit juice. They trigger a quick rise in blood sugar, followed by a faster drop. They can be useful for quick energy, but easy to overconsume. Complex carbs take longer to break down, providing a slower, more sustained release of energy. These are found in oats, rice, potatoes, whole grains and vegetables. They have a steadier impact on blood sugar levels and keep you fuller for longer. They’re better for sustained energy, appetite control, and overall diet quality. Both types can fit into your diet. What matters most is your overall calorie intake, portion control and choosing foods that help you stay full. Complex carbs are generally more filling and better for long-term energy, while simple carbs are quicker to digest and easier to overeat, but both have a place when used appropriately. Fibre is a type of carbohydrate your body doesn’t fully digest, but it plays an important role in your diet. Fibre provides roughly 0 to 2 calories per gram, another good reason to include it in your regular diet. Fibre helps add volume to meals, helping reduce hunger and helps avoid snacking. Fats A calorie dense food group providing 9 calories per gram, so should be used sparingly. Aim to get 20-30% of your calories from healthy fats. This is essential for hormones and health and helps with satiety. Some common foods rich in healthy fats include avocados, nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews), seeds (chia seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds), olive oil, avocado oil and oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines). Healthy fats are important for overall health, but they are calorie-dense, so portion control still matters—especially during fat loss.”
