- The Medieval World of Isidore of Seville. Truth from Words – Bryn Mawr Classical Review
Here it is worth recalling that the Sevillan Bishop authored a wide range of works before delivering at the end of his life in 636 his masterpiece, which would come to represent the pillar of medieval culture and of all future encyclopedias. Among those other writings, particularly interesting are the differentiae, de differentiis rerum and the synonimorum libri, all with a linguistic focus. Isidore has been much neglected within classical studies and, particularly in the Anglo-American scholarly context, he is considered a topic which falls under medieval studies, as often happens for other late antique authors as well.

1 Introduction1 Andrew Fear and Jamie Wood ‘The Great Doctor of our times, the newest ornament of the Catholic Church, last in time but by no means least in the field of doctrine […] the most learned man in these latter times, he whom one should name with reverence, Isidore […]’2 Such was the judgement on Isidore of Seville of the bishops who had gathered for the eighth Council of Toledo in 653, some 18 years after his death. Later ages have agreed – Dante placed the ardentespiroof Isidore alongside Solomon and Boethius in Paradise;3 in the eighteenth century Isidore was elevated to the status of Doctor of the church by the intellectually minded Pope Innocent XIII; and in the late twentieth century he was to become unofficially the patron saint of computer programmers and of the Internet.

- Etymologiae - Wikipedia
Etymologiae was printed in at least ten editions between 1472 and 1530, after which its importance faded during the Renaissance. The first scholarly edition was printed in Madrid in 1599; the first modern critical edition was edited by Wallace Lindsay in 1911. While less well known in modern times, modern scholars recognize the work's importance in preserving both classical texts, as well as insight into the medieval mindset. Isidore of Seville was born around 560 in Cartagena, and became bishop of Seville.
