Over 60 trees removed, including at least one cherry tree

Trees have recently been taken down at East Potomac Golf Links in D.C.

The ordinance will remain in place while the City develops a permanent tree protection ordinance. It follows recent tree trimming and removal within a Monarch Butterfly overwintering habitat and is intended to prevent damage to sensitive habitat areas within the City.

A council ranger then visited the site the day after the last day of clearing. Council officers discovered no approvals, permits, or consents had been issued for any tree removal and private investigators were engaged.

Eligible residents who receive a notice about or have a dead, sick or hazardous tree can apply for help from the City. Eligible residents or rental property owners can apply for help from the City to remove and replace a condemned tree.

This is a multi-year project that will address trees in parks, natural areas, and eventually in public rights-of-way. Due to the scale of impact, tree removals will be staggered and paired with chemical treatment (injections) to limit large-scale canopy loss and prevent a surge of hazardous trees.
