Iodine Discovery and Health Importance Accurate

“Now, I will talk about element 53, iodine. Long before iodine was formally discovered, people observed that seaweed and other sea plants seemed to improve certain health conditions, especially goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by iodine deficiency. These early observations helped later scientists understand the importance of this element in the body. Iodine was officially discovered in 1811 by French chemist Bernard Courtois. While extracting sodium compounds from seaweed ash for use in gunpowder production, he added sulfuric acid and noticed a violet vapor rising from the mixture. This vapor later formed dark crystals, which he suspected were a new substance. He shared his samples with other scientists for further study. In 1813, French chemist Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac confirmed that iodine was a new element and named it “iode,” from the Greek word ioeides, meaning violet-colored, referring to its vapor. British chemist Humphry Davy also independently confirmed iodine as an element and noted its similarity to chlorine. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, scientists discovered iodine’s important role in human health, particularly in thyroid function. It was later found that iodine deficiency causes goiter, and this led to public health measures such as iodized salt, which helps prevent iodine deficiency in populations. Today, iodine is widely used in medicine as an antiseptic, in medical imaging as a contrast agent, and in the treatment of thyroid-related conditions. It remains an essential element for human health because it is required for the production of thyroid hormones.”
