OLED achieves true black, LCD cannot
Question asked:
βOLED displays can achieve true black by turning off individual pixels, while LCD displays cannot achieve true black because their black pixels still emit light.β
Summary
OLED panels can produce true black because each pixel can be switched off completely, eliminating any light emission. LCD panels rely on a backlight that remains on even for black images, so their black levels always retain some light leakage and cannot reach absolute black.

Even though OLED displays can achieve "perfect" black by turning off individual pixels, your experience of that black will always be filtered through the lens of eigengrau.

OLED displays do have deeper black levels than traditional LCDs because each pixel emits its own light and can turn off completely, producing true black with no light bleed.

OLED can hit true black because each pixel can shut off completely.

A full black screen test pattern was displayed and across a large number of measurements, a black depth was measured. Using that along with the relevant brightness measurement we can also calculate the contrast ratio.

Contrast Ratio: OLED static contrast easily exceeds 1,000,000:1; whereas top-tier Mini-LED backlit LCDs might achieve a real static contrast ratio of 20,000:1 to 100,000:1, still a difference of orders of magnitude.

Absolute black does not exist in nature. Unless the entire image is completely black. Like in a cave with no lights. At which point any LCD could display the image as accurately as an OLED. Or a TV turned off.

QD OLED (Smasung) though - it can look better than VA under low light levels, but it quickly gets worse as light levels increase. At moderate light it's no better than average and under bright light it can actually look worse than most IPS.
