“One of the most obvious ways noise pollution affects songbirds is through communication. Songbirds rely a lot on their songs to attract mates and hold onto their territories, so when traffic noise drowns those songs out, it becomes a real problem. Some birds have been found to sing at higher pitches in noisy areas to try to be heard over the low rumble of cars and machinery (Slabbekoorn and Peet 2003). The issue with that is that the pitch and structure of a male’s song is actually how females judge whether he’s a good mate. So when he’s forced to change it, females might have a harder time making that call. Da Silva et al. (2015) also found that urban light and noise together push birds to shift when they sing, not just how. Young birds learning songs from adults in noisy environments can end up picking up distorted or incomplete versions, which can make them less successful at breeding later on (Slabbekoorn and den Boer-Visser 2006).”
