Pheophytin is formed when magnesium is removed from chlorophyll during the normal degradation of the pigment; it is an intermediate, not a waste product, and the released magnesium can be reused elsewhere in the plant. However, once magnesium is removed, pheophytin does not spontaneously revert to chlorophyll; regeneration requires the full chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway.
