Pulsary mají extrémně stabilní periodu a jsou využívány jako přírodní časoměry. Některé, tzv. milisekundové pulsary, otáčejí se stovky až přes tisíckrát za sekundu. Při objevu prvního pulsaru v roce 1967 vědci skutečně zvažovali možnost mimozemského signálu, než byla pravidelnost vysvětlena přirozeným jevem.
