Solar Powered Lamp Uses Photovoltaic Effect to Generate Energy

“Scientific Principle: Like most solar-powered gadgets and solar panels, the solar-powered lamp relies on the sun to generate energy for it to be usable. It uses the photovoltaic effect, which makes use of photons from the sun to create energy to power the device. In the solar-powered lamp, there are tiny solar cells that are made of silicon, one of the most abundant materials on earth, which makes it widely available and cost-effective. These solar cells are designed with an N-type (Phosphorus-doped) and P-type (Boron-Doped) layer of silicon, which also creates a p-n junction in the middle of both layers. As photons from sunlight hit the solar cells, they excite the electrons in the semiconductor, freeing them from their atoms and leaving behind positively charged holes or spaces. However, because of the P-N junction from the Negative and Positive type of silicon, the moving electrons are attracted to the negative side while the holes are attracted to the positive side. This movement of electrons then go through an external circuit, producing direct current (DC) electricity. Usually, this electricity is turned into alternating current (AC) electricity using an inverter, but smaller solar-powered gadgets can use direct current (DC) electricity without being turned into alternating current (AC) electricity. The direct current (DC) electricity can also be stored in a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, posing as a reservoir of energy for later use. Additionally, a typical solar-powered lamp may last 6-12 hours of constant use, providing ample time until you have access to electricity.”
