Is the Earth Really Flat Fact Check

“the earth is flat”
Earth is not flat
Confidence: High Checked on May 11, 2026

Summary

The planet Earth is an oblate spheroid, as demonstrated by satellite imagery, geodesic measurements, and centuries of scientific observation. NASA, NOAA, and numerous academic sources confirm that the Earth’s shape is round, not flat. Modern flat‑Earth claims lack scientific evidence and contradict established consensus.

  • Is the Earth round?

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA’s Terra satellite collected the land surface data over 16 days, while NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) produced a snapshot of the Earth’s clouds. While the Earth appears to be round when viewed from the vantage point of space, it is actually closer to an ellipsoid. However, even an ellipsoid does not adequately describe the Earth’s unique and ever-changing shape.
