On 22 March 1980, the Georgia Guidestones – four giant rough-edged stones encircling a centre slab with a capstone balancing on top – weighing 119 tons, were revealed to a crowd of about 100 people. One crowd member, a local pastor, immediately professed his belief that the stones were built for cult and devil worship because of its similar appearance to Stonehenge.

A satirical web site reported that the granite monument disappeared — and then unexpectedly reappeared in another state.

The 5-acre (2-hectare) site was purchased by Christian from a local farm owner. The owner and his children were given lifetime cattle grazing rights on the guidestones site. The monument was located off Georgia State Route 77 around 7 miles (11 km) north of the city of Elberton.

Christian and Martin selected a five-acre plot in the middle of a cow pasture, approximately seven miles north of Elberton and eight miles south of Hartwell, with a commanding view to the east and the west, on which to build the monument.

The Georgia Guidestones, located near Elberton, function as a sort of celestial clock. A hole in the capstone of the monument allows it to serve as sundial, while a slot cut through its center stone aligns the monument with the winter and summer solstices.
