The Greatest Showman Accuracy: Did P.T. Barnums Story Get Sanitized

"The Greatest Showman" ignores that Barnum's fortune came from by exploiting and abusing African Americans.

When one investigates the true history of his life, Barnum was not ‘the greatest showman’, and little of his impact on human lives was ‘great’. Early in his career, for example, Barnum bought an old slave called Joice Heth to display her as the supposedly 161-year old nurse of George Washington.

On the contrary, Barnum’s empire ... fame and fortune. Unsurprisingly, the film leaves untouched one of Barnum’s greatest controversies, his exploitation of Joice Heth....

Instead, the film’s creators opted to rewrite Barnum’s history and gloss over the deplorable things he did during the course of his lifetime. Barnum’s life and work would have been more accurately presented in the context of a horror drama, not a romance musical. It’s an insult to everyone Barnum took advantage of in his decades as a showman that his legacy of ableism, racism, animal abuse, and more would be so sanitized and divorced from reality and history as Hollywood has just done.

In real life, the only reason she agreed to the American tour was because P.T. Barnum promised her a great deal of money. However, she didn't keep a dime of it and had never planned to. She donated the $350,000 in profits to charity, specifically the endowment of free schools in Sweden. The $350,000 would equal roughly $10 million today. While fact-checking The Greatest Showman, we discovered that the real reason Jenny Lind (also known as the "Swedish Nightingale") quit the tour was because she was uncomfortable with Barnum's relentless marketing of her.

To be fair, Barnum’s opposition to slavery became more vehement later in his life, so he may not have been contradictory in his views during the time he kept Joice Heth. He may have learned from his mistakes later on. Nevertheless, there is no doubt he exploited her. While the Greatest Showman movie does a great job showing the cast of unusual characters that Barnum promoted, it never mentions that Joice Heth, a slave, was his first such ‘curiosity.’

As the LA Times points out, Barnum could have easily been a villainous figure rather than a hero of the film, as he not only conned people throughout his career but he exploited marginalized groups and played upon his audience's racist prejudices of the time to draw crowds. The Greatest Showman lightly touches on some of these issues, but because the movie is meant to be an inspiring and uplifting musical, it mostly glosses over Barnum's dark past.

Then I saw more Facebook statuses celebrating the ‘inspiration’ that was The Greatest Showman and an outpour of joy from my community online. Perhaps some twisted algorithm thought I would like the premise of this movie. My attempts to ignore it could no longer go on: this was a bubble that had to be popped. In the wake of exposing numerous men in Hollywood as abusers, pedophiles, and toxic misogynists, the embrace of this film and its protagonist is unbearably hypocritical. In an attempt to fully indict Mr. Barnum, I researched and found a rabbit hole of atrocity deeper than I ever realized.
