The Stations of the Cross are commonly found in churches as a series of 14 small icons or images. They can also appear in church yards arranged along paths.

In spare black-and-white lines – almost graffiti-like in their directness – Matisse grouped all 14 Stations together in an expansive mural more than six feet tall.

When the Moslem Turks blocked the access to the Holy Land, reproductions of the stations were erected at popular spiritual centers, including the Dominican Friary at Cordova and the Poor Clare Convent of Messina (early 1400s); Nuremberg (1468); Louvain (1505); Bamberg, Fribourg and Rhodes (1507); and Antwerp (1520). Many of these stations were produced by reknown artists and are considered masterpieces today.

In 1986, a young junior high school student, J.J. Sweigart, met R.D. Robinson, a local Juneau artist, through the Juneau Public School District’s “Artist in Residence” program. One day, while working on classroom art, Sweigart approached Robinson about repairing the damaged station sculptures at the Shrine.

Treacy banned additional Masses from being said in Necedah, but lifted the ban on August 14th when it became apparent the number of people who would be in attendance. However, the diocese reiterated their officially skeptical position. In November of 1950, Milwaukee archbishop Moses E. Kiley ordered the shrine's statue of Our Lady of Fátima and the Stations of the Cross be removed.
