Claim they plan an AI data center in Haughton LA is false

Jeff Landry and executives with Meta announced shocking news: the California-based company planned to build a massive data center to power AI computing, in fields where corn, rice, cotton and soybeans were grown.

Hatch, an IT infrastructure engineer for a bank who uses AI in her job, says she and her staunchly Republican cousin "never saw eye to eye on politics." But to her surprise, the last time they met, they were "on the same page about everything" when it came to data centers.

But some of the most alarming claims about their environmental impact are based on outdated estimates, missing context or questionable math. Host Megan McArdle is joined by writer and former high school physics teacher Andy Masley to separate the myths from the legitimate concerns and break down why misleading claims spread so easily.

Perhaps the most potent symbol of all of this, is the pro-Trump Republican Senate candidate in Texas, Ken Paxton, attacking data centres, campaigning against their tax breaks and proposing that operators of the facilities should be criminally liable if the technology "empowered AI chatbots that undermine children's safety".
