Disc Production Change Claim Fact-Checked

“When the production facility making your discs have been gearing up for a change in production for months, there is no chance for a reverse to ever be made”
Mostly false
Confidence: High Checked on July 14, 2026

Summary

Sony’s disc‑manufacturing facilities have been retooling for months, and major reports state that a reversal of the decision to cease large‑scale disc production is highly unlikely. However, they do not rule out any possibility entirely, and limited production capacity may persist beyond the planned cut‑off. Therefore, the claim that there is “no chance” of a reversal is inaccurate.

  • Bioactive Therapies for Degenerative Disc Disease: Current State of the Art and Clinical Applications - ScienceDirect

Current treatments, including physical therapy, pain management, and surgical interventions such as spinal fusion and total disc replacement, do not reverse degeneration. Bioactive therapies offer a potential alternative by targeting the underlying degenerative process. Cell-based therapies, including the use of mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-rich plasma, aim to restore disc structure and function by promoting extracellular matrix production and reducing inflammation.

  • Sony Will Have Capacity to Continue Manufacturing Some Game Discs Beyond 2028 Cut-Off Date | Push Square

Want 200,000 copies in one region of a game released 3 months before the end of regular production? Absolutely. Want 50k discs for a year old indie title, maybe not. Although I doubt that's a regular occurrence anyway. Either way you will probably have to wait longer. This makes no difference to the chance of Sony reversing course, they clearly have planned for all of this, the pressing plants will wind down gradually and either operate at a reduced rate with less machines or the reduced production will move to other facilities until whatever day they decide to turn that off completely.
